(August 12, 2021, Beijing, China) -- Recently, Chipone Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. (Chipone) announced that it has successfully developed and applied ICNU1210, the first silicon-based OLED display chip. The R&D of this chip was mainly undertaken by the Advanced Display Technology Division set up in January 2020. As the newest division out of five key divisions of Chipone, the Advanced Display Technology Division places its focus on the technological innovation and R&D of new products in the field of advanced OLEDs. Products developed by it are mainly applied for silicon-based micro OLED display chips for AR/VR and the relevant micro OLED applications.

As forecast by IDC, the scale of silicon-based OLED market is expected to reach RMB 12 billion in 2021. In 2020, the investment for production lines exceeded RMB 20 billion and there have been over 10 manufacturers engaged in relevant business in Chinese mainland. Chipone, one of the leading display chip design enterprises that set foot in this field earlier, has successfully developed and applied the first product in this new application and field giving credit to its profound research and innovation ability in the field of display chips over the past 13 years, as well as its solid and professional design ability. It even reaches the leading level in the industry.

As a new semi-conductor display technology, Micro OLED sets the features of semi-conductor and OLED technologies in one, i.e. high resolution, high color gamut, fast response, high integration, low power consumption, small size, etc. It is deemed as the main scheme for near-eye display applications. As the upstream and downstream industry chains further develop and advance, AR/VR near-eye display industry will get a big boost backed by the 5G and AI technologies, as well as continuously improved hardware equipment, content data, terminal and other ecological systems. Featuring high contrast dynamic range, slim design and low power consumption, silicon-based OLED is well suitable for wearable displays, which has attracted multiple AR/VR products launched in recent years.

“Looking back at history, we know that the trend of artificial display devices has been constantly approaching the human eyes since the invention of movies in the late 19th century. The display technologies can be seen everywhere and even in front of our eyeballs in the future. For those on IC industry chain, near-eye and micro OLED will surely be the next blue ocean. Therefore, the Advanced Display Technology Division is devoted to continuously making efficient and stable R&D innovation in silicon-based OLED, keeping up with the market demands, and providing customers with advanced and leading silicon-based OLED chip products despite its short history,” said Mr. Zhou Wenbin, general manager of the Advanced Display Technology Division, Chipone.

Chipone has always focused on the technical breakthrough in the field of chip design with continuous innovation as the core since its establishment in 2008, so as to explore an independent innovation path with Chinese characteristic in China’s display sector that lacks of chips and screens. Now, Chipone has applied for over 1,300 core patents, and made many technical breakthroughs, breaking the technical monopoly of foreign enterprises in this sector and filling in technical gaps in high-end displays.
